In the past 2-3 years, Booz has made a huge effort to build their brand with students on campus at LBS, putting in many hours of essentially voluntary time and effort into various activities, with Career Services, student clubs, and even in the classroom. Recent Booz events have included: a half day of workshops to over 150 students as they kindly provide the introductory session to our course ‘Creative problem solving for case interviews’; the evening ‘MBA Poker Challenge’; and sponsorship of MBAT and Sundowners.

McKinsey - the World's #1 strat consulting firm, driving change across the globe, and hiring from LBS this summer
On Friday, it was McKinsey’s turn to present to LBS first year MBAs on internship opportunities for 2012. Over 200 students crammed into the venue eagerly awaiting what for many, I suspect, was the highlight of our Corporate Partner Recruiting week. They weren’t let down.

BCG London building a public sector practice?
I did hear on the grapevine that BCG London is building a public sector practice - interesting at a time when the Tory-led government has massively cut consulting spend across the sector - however, so much of that was implementation and IT, I wonder if there's not an increased need for strategy?
Here's some BCG latest thinking on the public sector anyway, for those that are interested.

BCG - looking to hire 6% of LBS MBAs again this year, or even more?
BCG presented yesterday evening at LBS to MBA students seeking summer internships – this post attempts to capture the essence of what was said. As always, they didn’t talk about how they are structured, how smart and fun their people are, how they only work on the most important issues in organisations or that they are all about delivering results, not reports. Of course, they are all these things, but instead they choose to share some of their recent thinking and work – in this case the work they have been doing as strategy consulting partners to LOCOG – the London Olympics Organising Committee.

Preparing for fit interviews
No time for a detailed post, but here's the LBS guide to preparing for consulting fit interviews at MBA level.
Needless to say, these materials formed the introduction to a 2 hour hands-on practical session of practising interview questions with peer and expert feedback - nothing beats practise!

Which electives should I do?
A common question from first year MBA students wishing to pursue careers in strategy consulting is 'which electives would you recommend I choose to maximise my chances of getting hired, strategy obviously but what else?'
The short answer is, it really doesn't matter!

Practical frameworks for problem solving
Here's a presentation I mentioned earlier in the week. I shared it with London Business School MBAs this week and it seemed to go down well, although I did my usual bad job of sticking to time.
The point of the presentation is this - although the best problem solvers develop bespoke frameworks or structures for each complex problem they face, as a short cut, and in particular in a 30 minute case interview, it pays to have thought about a few frameworks first, and how you might use them.
Not rocket science, but let me know if you enjoy, agree, or disagree with any of this stuff...

AT Kearney LBS recruiting - autumn 2011
AT Kearney presented today to graduating students at LBS - as usual a slick presentation that involved junior and senior members of the firm and gave a great overview of what they do. They are clearly passionate about what they do, and what makes them different, and keen to hire from LBS into what is, at least in regions such as Russia and the Middle East, a high growth firm. This was their third campus presentation in a little over a week - starting with the kickoff of their Global Prize 2011, and attendance at our Corporate Partner Evening last week.
